Jiu Jitsu Journal – 2/24/2020

February 24th 2020, 6:45-7:45 pm

Gi, seminar with Master Marcelo

Warm Up:

  • shrimp out (down the mat on 1 side, then again on the other side)
  • shrimp out, post an arm (make sure it is to your side, not behind you), then scoot your butt to the posted arm
  • sit, post an arm, then scoot butt to posted arm, back and forth down the mat

Drill:

  • Butterfly hook practice – get into butterfly guard and have your partner kneel, then lift each leg (alternating). When they lift their leg, keep your hook on their thigh

Technique:

#1 – butterfly guard to arm drag

  • sitting in front of your opponent, get into butterfly guard
  • your opponent will grip the bottom of both of your pant legs and push them down to keep your legs from moving
  • move the under hook grip from behind their back to behind their elbow on the opposite arm. At the same time, move your same side leg out of the guard
  • post out your other arm, move your hips out of the way towards your hand, and then arm drag your opponent

#2 – butterfly guard to sweep

  • sitting in front of your opponent, get into butterfly guard
  • your opponent will grip the bottom of both of your pant legs and push them down to keep your legs from moving
  • wrap both of your arms around your opponent’s arms above the elbow and squeeze them into your chest (this will make it very difficult for them to keep the grip on your pant leg)
  • lean back, lift them with your legs, and then roll to the side to sweep them and get to mount

#3 – butterfly guard to shoulder lock submissionย  ((( I’m not sure if I’m describing this technique correctly – will need to edit later after some verification! )))

  • sitting in front of your opponent, get into butterfly guard
  • your opponent will grip the bottom of your pant legs or your knees
  • life your leg out then under hook the same side arm and reach over their should with your opposite arm, and grip your hands together on their tricep
  • lean back and bring their arm into you just above their elbow
  • keep your leg on their back or staple their legs with your leg to keep them from getting up

Rolling:

  • first roll – I need to remember to stay on top with larger and/or stronger opponents. If I don’t want to be squashed, I need to stay out of the bottom
  • second roll (with a kiddo) – worked guard and smooth transitions, allowed her to work; need to encourage her to be confident in herself and keep moving โค
  • third roll – Julio kicks my ass again
  • fourth roll – good transition from failed elbow lock to arm bar; need to watch myself so I don’t give up my arm when I’m not paying attention
