Technique: take downs from standing

#1: ankle pick to knee grab to take down

  • you and your opponent are standing facing one another
  • slight step forward with your lead leg, tap your opponent’s shoulder or forehead with your hand that is opposite your lead leg, then bring your hand back to you; repeat a second time
  • pretend that you’re going to repeat the move again, but instead grab their opposite wrist with your hand and pull it away from you; at the same time, drop and shoot to their closest leg
  • put your head against their leg below the knee and grip the inside of their ankle; grip the outside of their other ankle with your other hand
  • push against their leg with your head and pull their legs into you at the same time to take them down
  • keep your grips and as they fall, move up their body to maintain control; stay tight and do not allow space

#2: ankle pick to “tree” to take down

  • you and your opponent are standing facing one another
  • slight step forward with your lead leg, tap your opponent’s shoulder or forehead with your hand that is opposite your lead leg, then bring your hand back to you; repeat a second time
  • pretend that you’re going to repeat the move again, but instead move your torso slightly away from them then drop and shoot to grab behind their ankle with the same side hand and post your other hand next to it (kind of like a push up position)
  • all at once, push off the ground with your free hand and pick up their ankle, get up and drive them backward until they fall (you can also pick up the ankle and put it on your shoulder for more support and control)

Rolling:

  • I got in four, 4 minute rounds today. I felt like I am starting to control my breathing better and that I am panicking less, which makes things easier. I want to be more purposeful with each move and being able to breath without panic is one less obstacle in the way to get me there.
